ASAM Fundamentals of Addiction Medicine Virtual: April 22, 2024

Addiction as a disease continues to cost the global community a staggering amount both financially and in lives lost, but there are treatments available to help patients.This workshop will provide an overview of the basics of addiction medicine needed to screen, diagnose, treat and/or refer patients with addiction. Featuring real cases and discussions led by experts, attendees will gain practical knowledge of evidence-based approaches demonstrating solutions are available to help patients with addiction. This workshop is for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and behavioral health specialists. 

What You'll Learn

After taking this course, learners will be able to:

 1. Identify one's own feelings and attitudes that promote or prevent therapeutic responses to patients with substance use disorders.

2. Apply the philosophy of harm reduction to enhance patient centered care for people with substance use disorders.

3. Demonstrate a knowledge of the neurobiological changes that occur during addictions.

4. Use motivational interviewing to enhance patient’s readiness to change unhealthy behaviors.

5. Use validated patient screening tools to detect substance use and interpret a spectrum of results.

6. Conduct substance use assessments using the DSM-5 criteria and including a biopsychosocial approach.

7. Offer evidence-based pharmacotherapy and behavioral interventions that are appropriate to specific substances and usage patterns.

DEA Education Requirement

As an accredited organization named in Section 1263 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, ASAM certifies that completion of this course meets the DEA requirement for 8 hours of education on substance use disorder(s). 

 Continuing Education Credits

In support of improving patient care, the American Society of Addiction Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Physicians: The American Society of Addiction Medicine designates this enduring material for a maximum of 8 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurses: This activity awards 8 Nursing contact hours.

PAs: ASAM has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 8 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. Approval is valid until 11/12/2026. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.

Social Workers: As a Jointly Accredited Organization, ASAM is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved under this program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive 8 general continuing education credits.

Other Clinical Licenses: Upon completion of the activity and online evaluation, all other participants may request a certificate of participation. Participants may submit this certificate of participation to their professional organization/institute as documentation for completing this accredited continuing activity. 

 

Cancellations, Substitutions and Refunds Policy:

Live In Person/Virtual Trainings:

• A colleague may be substituted at no extra charge if Centralized Training is notified at least two business days before the training.

• Requests for refunds for an in-person/virtual workshop must be received 72 hours prior to the workshop.

Self-Paced Online Trainings:

• No refunds are offered for self-paced online trainings.
