This virtual training is being sponsored by the HHSC Substance Use Disorders (SUD) Programs. SUD contractors have priority for this training.
This training equips counselors to recognize, assess, and treat nonsubstance addictions with the same rigor afforded to substance use disorders. We begin by dismantling common myths and biases (e.g., “it’s just willpower” or “less serious than substances”) that can delay care and heighten stigma. Building on the ASAM definition of addiction, the session clarifies core features—compulsive engagement, impaired control, persistent harm, and craving/withdrawal—and shows how they present across behavioral domains. Participants then explore four high-impact areas: gambling disorder, compulsive sexual behavior disorder, problematic internet/gaming, and compulsive buying. For each, we review defining features, risk factors, prevalence, and frequent comorbidities (depression, anxiety, ADHD, SUD), as well as functional consequences in relationships, health, finances, and school/work. The training closes with practical assessment tips and treatment planning: CBT targets, leveraging peer supports (e.g., Gamblers Anonymous), family-systems repair, and judicious use of medication for cooccurring conditions. Counselors leave with sharper language, stronger conceptualization skills, and concrete tools that expand their clinical reach—ready to reduce shame, increase engagement, and offer evidence-informed care for clients navigating behavioral addictions.
