This virtual training is being sponsored by the HHSC Residential Treatment Center (RTC) Project. Staff of children’s RTCs contracted with the HHSC RTC Project have priority for this training. If you do not work for or with a Children’s RTC contracted with HHSC via the RTC Project, you are not eligible to register/attend.
This training equips residential staff with knowledge and practical skills to safely and effectively de-escalate challenging behaviors among youth. It focuses on understanding the underlying causes of crisis behaviors, using trauma-informed and relationship-based approaches to prevent escalation, and applying evidence-based techniques to restore safety and connection.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will learn to:
- Recognize early signs of agitation and emotional distress in youth.
- Apply trauma-informed communication strategies that reduce fear and defensiveness.
- Use nonverbal and verbal de-escalation techniques that promote safety and respect.
- Identify triggers related to trauma, developmental stage, and environment.
- Maintain emotional regulation and self-awareness during crises.
- Implement post-incident debriefing to support youth and staff learning.

• A colleague may be substituted at no extra charge if Centralized Training is notified at least two business days before the training.
• Requests for refunds for an in-person/virtual workshop must be received 72 hours prior to the workshop.
Self-Paced Online Trainings:
• No refunds are offered for self-paced online trainings.
