This virtual training is being sponsored by HHSC Peer and Recovery Services Programs.
Eligibility Requirements: Registrants must be certified Peer Specialists (MHPS or RSPS).
As peer specialists, we strive to support others in making their own choices and defining their own paths—but what happens when our own beliefs or assumptions get in the way? This interactive training invites participants to explore how both implicit and explicit biases can show up in peer support work, sometimes without us even realizing it. Together, we’ll examine how these biases can unintentionally interfere with core peer values like mutuality, respect, and especially self-determination. Through guided reflection, discussion, and real-life examples, we’ll increase our awareness of the ways bias can influence our language, our reactions, and the options we present—or don’t present—to the people we support. This session offers a supportive space to get curious about our own perspectives, deepen self-awareness, and strengthen our ability to walk alongside others in a way that truly centers their voice and choice.
