High-Intensity CBTp Training for CSC-FEP Providers: September 17-19, 2024

This training is for CSC-FEP Providers ONLY.

CBTp is a time-limited, solutions-focused, structured form of talk therapy that is indicated for individuals who experience distress related to psychotic symptoms. CBTp includes the application of cognitive skills aimed toward changing thoughts to improve feelings and behaviors, as well as behavioral strategies to help cope with distress and impairment.

CBTp’s evidence base spans over 30 years, and it has been studied in more than 50 randomized clinical trials, more than a dozen meta-analyses, and 4 systematic reviews. In recognition of this mounting evidence base, CBTp has been recommended by national psychosis treatment guidelines in the U.S. since they were first developed by the American Psychiatric Association in the 1990s. However, access to treatment remains alarmingly low in the United States.

Who should participate?

Providers participating in this training would ideally be licensed Master’s or PhD level clinicians who can meet with clients on a regular or weekly basis.

Goals of High-Intensity CBTp Training

Goals of participating in high-intensity CBTp training include developing proficiency in facilitating individual CBTp. This includes developing a formulation for each individual client and using that formulation to drive psychotherapy sessions. Participants will receive up to 12 consultation sessions with a UW trainer after a three-day virtual training to get guidance on the application of this intervention to clients with psychosis.

Who is High-Intensity CBTp Intended for?

High-intensity CBTp is best suited for individuals experiencing distress related to psychotic symptoms; those with psychiatric comorbidities, including substance use disorders; those who are at increased risk for suicidal or homicidal behaviors, and those who have been found to be “treatment resistant.” High-intensity CBTp is ideal for mental health providers who can meet with clients regularly (ideally weekly) for 45 to 55 minutes. High-intensity CBTp is well-suited for providers with moderate experience and/or knowledge of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

What Does Training and Consultation Look Like and When is it Held?

Orientation Call: August 15th, 9am CST

Intensive Training: September 17th – 19th, 9am-5pm CST each day

Consultation Calls: 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month beginning October 3rd , 11:30-12:30pm CST (last call on April 3rd)

Intensive training will focus on didactic learning, experiential exercises, and rehearsal opportunities to learn how to deliver CBTp treatment. This training cohort will be limited to 10 trainees, which will allow for a very interactive training environment. Be ready to engage with fellow trainees!

Consultation enables us to create a learning community whereby all participants learn from an expert trainer (via clinical feedback), learn by presenting your work to others (via case presentations and general round-robin consultation), and learn from one another (via case-based discussions and co-learning). You can expect that consultation calls will include individual check-in, case-based consultation, trainee clinical case presentations, and supplemental learning on special topics as needed.

Trainees are expected to attend at least 9 of the 12 consultation calls following the intensive training. Each trainee will present one of their CBTp cases during a consultation call. This allows trainees to discuss challenges related to using CBTp techniques with peers and CBTp trainers and receive feedback and guidance.

A critical part of the training program also involves audio recording sessions with clients, and uploading to a HIPAA compliant, secure OneDrive. Each trainee will receive a fidelity review of their session with personalized feedback (a minimum score of 3 out of 5 indicates competence).

Training Materials and Equipment

Included Materials: All trainees will receive access to an online training binder, tip sheets, clinical handouts, and supporting articles. Trainees will also receive a copy of Cognitive Therapy of Schizophrenia, David G. Kington & Douglas Turkington, 2008.

Materials/Equipment for Clinician to Secure: To participate and meet requirements for training and consultation calls, clinicians will need to have access to a webcam (for Zoom participation) and headset (to ensure confidentiality during Zoom meetings).
