Motivational Interviewing in Correctional Settings: Building Change-Oriented Conversations with Justice-Involved Individuals Virtual: July 22-23, 2025

This interactive 2-day training provides an introduction to the foundational principles and practices of Motivational Interviewing (MI) for professionals working in correctional settings. MI is an evidence-based, person-centered communication approach designed to enhance an individual’s motivation for change by exploring and resolving ambivalence.

Participants will learn the core spirit and skills of MI and how to apply them with individuals involved in the justice system. Through practical examples and guided practice, the training will explore how MI can support behavior change, reduce resistance, and promote collaborative relationships within correctional environments. Emphasis will be placed on using MI to encourage accountability while maintaining empathy and respect for autonomy.

This training is suitable for correctional officers, case managers, mental health professionals, re-entry specialists, and other staff who engage directly with incarcerated or formerly incarcerated individuals.
