Promoting Healing Centered Environments: Responding to Escalating Situations Virtual: July 10, 2025

This virtual training is being sponsored by HHSC Peer and Recovery Services Programs.

Eligibility Requirements: Registrants must be certified Peer Specialists (MHPS or RSPS).

In the context of their work, it is not unusual for peer support staff to encounter situations where people are experiencing intense emotions. It is important that peer staff have a plan for responding to these situations in an effective and calming manner. Grounded in healing centered practices, this training will explore strategies that incorporate both verbal and non-verbal communication to de-escalate intense situations. By participating in this training, peer staff will

• Become familiar with the impact of implicit and explicit bias in peer support work.

• Learn best practices to deactivate the automatic responses.

• Create a plan for responding to escalating situations in group settings.

• Recognize peer-centered approaches to supporting individuals who hear voices, see visions, or have other sensory experiences during crises.
