Trends in Substance Use and Treatment: Navigating the Future: August 20, 2024

This virtual training is being sponsored by the HHSC Substance Use Disorders (SUD) Programs. SUD contractors have priority for this training.

Recent legislation changes and adjustments in substance use trends have impacted the landscape of treatment across the United States. Treatment facilities are faced with the task of adjusting to these changes while providing appropriate evidence-based treatment. The addition of Xylazine has exacerbated the opiate crisis while the national legalization of marijuana has created unique problems especially for young people. This presentation will identify changes in national trends in substance use and behavioral addictions such as gambling. Participants will identify ways treatment centers have attempts to navigate these changes and identify potential resources to assist clients. Finally, participants will identify adjustments to current treatment provision such as Motivational Interviewing and Harm Reduction in an attempt to navigate these changes.

Objective 1: Participants will identify changes in trends in substance use and behavioral addictions.

Objective 2: Participants will identify changes to treatment programs to help meet the needs of clients with these changes in substance use and behavioral addictions.

Objective 3: Participants will identify options for modifications to Harm Reduction and Motivational Interviewing to assist with treatment of their clients navigating such changes.
